Team Captains Message: The Comeback Mindset

As we head into the end of spring and look forward to long course season, we thought it might be beneficial to offer some of our swimmers’ thoughts on training and dealing with long (and short term) injuries. We asked them about their experiences, and zoomed in on some words of wisdom for staying optimistic and continuing to be motivated to reach their goals:

Magnolia S: “I think that it is really important to remember where you came from and how at one point you couldn't kick or pull or swim and now you are. Like Stefan is always reminding me how at one point I couldn't even kick and now I'm able to sprint (kinda) and do distance. So it's just generally important to remember that you have made it through a lot and you are amazing.”

Marvin N: “The thought of getting back to going for the next cut and going to see my friends at practice keeps me going. And always think one step ahead and make the best of what you have.”

Sydney R: “I would say that it’s okay to be frustrated and upset about your injury. We all do the sport because we love swimming and improving, and a hindrance, such as an injury, can feel like the end of the world. What personally would cheer me up is trying to celebrate my little wins. I got significantly better at breaststroke during my injury, because I had so much time to work on my breaststroke kick. Maybe you’re much better at pulling now, or your fly has gotten a lot better because you can’t do breaststroke. I’m not saying that an injury is a blessing in disguise, but it’s not always all bad.”

Officials Needed!

Are you interested in learning about how to become a USA Swimming Official (wearing white shirts and blue pants) ?

There are two types of officials:
Stroke and Turn: These officials are stationed around the pool at meets and judge compliance with USA Swimming stroke and turn rules.

Adminsitration: These officials help behind the scenes with swim meet administration.

We are required to provide a specific number of Officials at Swim Meets, and our club is fined if we don’t meet these requirements. Right now we don't have enough officials to comfortably meet our requirements.

PST is looking for volunteers interested in starting the training process. This involves an online training course followed by an apprenticeship on the pool deck. You do not need to be a swimmer yourself to become an official! See here for information on the process, and make sure to reach out to our Official Coordinator, Mike Hakiel mike.hakiel@gmail.com, if you’re interested!

Additionally, officials receive a dues reduction on their swimmers registration with the team.

Calling All Singers!

Open call for a swimmer interested in singing the Star Spangled Banner at our upcoming hosted swim meet on March 28th & 29th at Mills/ Northeastern. If interested, please email meetdirector@piedmontswimteam.org.
